Leum and Matt were getting dessert at the ice cream parlor a block over. After Fuga had shown Leum her vanished timeline, Leum got chills everywhere and said she didn’t feel good. Fuga had nodded, said she needed time to process, and asked Matt to take her out for some ice cream.

As they walked down the block and into the store, Leum felt like they were acting out a fake second date. While Matt walked casually and made small talk, Leum wondered if it was all an act.

“Did you ever really like me? Or was it all just for work?” she asked between licks.

Matt motioned to a table outside the ice cream parlor. They sat. “You’re not a bad person at all—I actually do enjoy your company. But to truthfully answer your question, yes you were my mark. Fuga had a dream about you many months ago, and was happy when I connected.”

“You could have just been honest with me from the get-go.”

“Maybe, but there was a strong possibility you wouldn’t have believed me, and we wouldn’t have been able to help you. Fuga thought this was the best way.”

“Is she really a witch?”

He nodded. “I’ve seen her do some crazy stuff, and helped her with some of it as well.”

“Are you a witch too?”

“No, but I do dabble in magick when needed.”

“So, what are you?”

“A handsome cat man. Meow.”

She laughed, and the two finished their treats. As they walked back to Mystical Merchandise, Leum asked, “Am I going to be okay?”

“I think so. Once we home in on whoever is doing this to you then we’ll be able to take him out of the equation.”

“What about all the other victims? What about Jane?”

“They will have the closure needed to bring comfort to their spirits.”

“I still miss her.”

“I know you do. Once we find the person, it won’t bring Jane back. But I think she would be happy to know you didn’t succumb to the same fate she did.”

Leum nodded. Seraf stood at the entrance to the store with something in her hand.

“I spoke to Fuga, and she wanted me to give you this.” She held out an amethyst necklace. “To continue to protect you.”

“Thank you,” Leum said, and put it on. “I won’t take it off.”

A thought crossed her mind. “But why are you giving me another amethyst when you gave Jane malachite?”

“Different people respond to different stones best. I sensed Jane needed malachite; so far for you, amethyst seems to be resonating with your vibrations and protecting you. This stone should serve you well.”

“Won’t this one crack as well? I thought my other one was supposed to protect me.”

“And it did. It kept the whatever was after you from getting to you.”

“I did feel like I was under attack by the whispers…”

“There you go. Who knows what else would have happened had you not been wearing your amethyst.”

Leum thanked her again and left Matt and Seraf at the store to walk to her car. So many thoughts raced across her mind, all stressing about the possibility that she was going to die soon.
